“Wait, you do what? Where?!”
To this day, people are taken aback when they hear about my job. Their response is typically a mix of confusion and curiosity as they respond, “Wait, you do what? Where?!” And while the details of my job have changed over time, the main punchline hasn’t: I work at a fishery up in Alaska. I often get asked this question when someone is trying to figure out how I manage travel as much as I do. I don’t have a permanent home- I have a car, a travel bug, a suitcase, and an awesome seasonal job that finances all my crazy ideas! At the fishery, we work hard and earn every penny of our paycheck. Some people choose to put that money towards school, buying a car, or even just saving it! For me, I personally choose to hop on a plane and see how far I can get.
Though I was never a consistent traveler in my pre-LCF life, this job has really opened the doors and created a new way for me to live. After my second season, I bought a one-way ticket to Iceland to volunteer at an outdoor Scout camp for 3 months. It was here that I met my partner and made incredible connections that allowed me to do the same thing for an additional two months in England. Since beginning to travel 4 years ago, I’ve been to almost 30 countries and had experiences I could never have imagined: bathing elephants in Thailand, riding a camel through the Sahara in Morocco, island hopping in Greece, wine tasting in Tuscany, surf lessons in Bali- just to name a few.
I’ve recently had a birthday and took a step back to look at my life (since I’m getting old), and had this deep realization that I’m exactly where I want to be- and I think a large portion of that is because of Leader Creek. I get to work for a company that is constantly challenging me, but always supporting me, and when the hard work is done, it gives me the opportunity to go on whatever crazy adventure I come up with next.
