Blood, Fish and Family
Not too many people get the chance to work with their family member, let alone doing a job that is usually a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity. After two years at Leader Creek (and two years of my sister begging to join me), I finally invited her to experience a summer getting her hands dirty and pushing herself harder than she ever has. Like me, she instantly fell in love with the job, getting to meet people from all over the US and beyond, and learning more about herself and her work ethic.
We’ve now been working together for the last 3 summers and it’s incredible! It’ll be really special to be able to look back and reminisce about our time in Alaska, working 16 hours a day, and doing it side by side. Each season I’ve watched my sister grow more and more as a person and each day she makes me more and more proud. The job is very difficult: physically, mentally, and emotionally, but to be able to get through it with my sister makes it a little easier. We’re able to be each other’s support system and always walk away with the funniest stories that the rest of our family won’t ever be able to fully understand.
After our 2018 season, we decided to backpack around Southeast Asia, which was a big deal because it was my sister’s first time out of the country! We ended up traveling for about 2.5 months and meeting up with other LCF employees along the way. We’ve officially created memories all over the world and it’s cultivated a stronger relationship between the two of us. And this was all possible because of Leader Creek!
