FAST TIMES AT FISHMONTE HIGH

This was my first summer job headed into college, and I signed up to travel out of state to work in Alaska! My friend Kyle and I heard about a rad place that provided housing, food, and plenty of hours full of fast fish and fun times! Crazy how the time just flew by although it did have its moments where time stood still and was truly irrelevant. That’s what I think I loved about it so much, the endless amount of time you get to think, talk, and make future plans you have been daydreaming about. Another is the diversity of people you get to meet. People from every stretch of the United States and farther. So many cool people, lifelong friendships, and an overall experience you will walk away from with a better understanding of who you are. The food was honestly way better than I thought it was going to be and has been awesome and getting better every year. Hats off to the Kitchen Crew, y’all rock!

Headed into my sixth season with LCF and I can now say I’ve weathered the storm a few times. Thankfully they provide laundry and they will even fold it for you so you can keep trucking through those tougher days. You’re truly supported here during the summer. So many perks about LCF, it makes it easier coming back every year. Highly recommend taking a few weeks out of your summer to jam pack a full summer of work to set up your future adventure or pay for your schooling. Heads up, extra socks saved my life, when they say bring a lot, bring double of what you’re planning on bringing. It will reward you in the long run!

All in all, I wouldn’t trade any of the summers I have under my belt working in Alaska for just another job to get me through the summer or another meaningless job where you don’t feel alive. The scenery is second to none. You will see bears, eagles, and other small furry friends roaming the river across the way. The sunrises and nighttime sunlight are amazing. This place builds and adds character, and you get to walk away from Alaska with the experience, memories, and a nice check at the end. This place has so much inspiration as you walk around the campus and see the artwork on shipping containers and paintings of old legends on the side of housing. It doesn’t look like all the other old beat up cannery’s, this place has that cool culture about it! If you’re lucky enough to spend a few moments inside Marsha’s shack you will encounter decades of history with just a few glances around the place. It’s unbelievable! Hope to see all new and old faces this summer for Fast Times at FishMonte High! Peace and Love Y’all.
